Vitamin Supplementation in the Prevention and Management of Skin Conditions

By James Meschino, D.C., M.S.
Research and Clinical Director,
RenaiSanté Institute of Integrative Medicine

Most individuals engage in the practice of vitamin supplementation for purposes of enhancing their general well-being, reducing risk of certain diseases and/or to aid in the management of various health conditions (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoarthritis, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). A lesser appreciated function of vitamin and mineral supplementation involves health-promoting effects on the skin with respect to skin texture, skin appearance and the ability of certain micronutrients to reduce photo-aging of the skin, UV-light damage linked to skin cancer, and as therapeutic agents used in the treatment of various skin conditions. Research studies demonstrate that an important benefit of taking a high potency, antioxidant and B-Vitamin- enriched, multiple vitamin and mineral supplement each day includes the synthesis of healthier skin cells, slowing of skin aging, and added protection against the cellular events involved in the development of melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.
