"What Can I Do For My Childs' Growing Pains"
The need for children to be checked regularly for "subluxations" or misalignments of the spine and limbs, cannot be over emphasized. Recently, a patient, as a "last resort" brought in her 8-year-old son. The child had been suffering from knee pain for approximately 3 months. The medical doctor diagnosed the child as suffering from "growing pains," and the mother was told that the pain was just part of a growth spurt. Having questioned the mother about the child, she mentioned that the child's knee pain started abruptly 3 months ago. Further questioning revealed that the child was playing in the house and fell forward onto his knee while running up the stairs. Having examined the child, all orthopedic tests were negative ruling out a fracture of the knee. Palpation revealed muscle spasm of the quadricep and calf muscles of the affected limb. Tenderness was noted over the kneecap and back of knee. The child was then evaluated using the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique protocol which revealed a posterior tibia that is common when the knee is hit from the front such as in football or if the patient falls on the knee. Immediately following the adjustment, the child stated that the knee pain was gone.
Looking at the anatomy of the knee, a posterior or backwards misalignment of the knee affects the ligaments, tendons, meniscus and muscles acting on the knee. This simple, yet effective adjustment restores proper alignment and movement of the knee taking pressure off of the above-mentioned structures. The patient was re-evaluated one week late and mentioned having no knee pain since the adjustment. Palpation of the quad and calf muscles revealed a marked improvement in the spasm of these muscles.
Although smaller in stature, children are no different than adults. They experience the same physical, chemical and emotional stressors adults do. Due to rough play, hockey, falls and so forth, children are just as prone to injuries as adults. Although, "growing pains" are commonly diagnosed, there is no need for your child to suffer needlessly. Instead of opting for children's pain medication, many parents are turning to chiropractic care to help their children's' ailments. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective alternative treatment for many of these conditions labeled as growing pains. Why let your child suffer needlessly! Your child could be one chiropractic adjustment away from enjoying a healthier life.
