Benefits of Weight-training

Healthy muscles make for a healthier, happier life. Weight training is a popular way of achieving this. Although some people who exercise on a regular basis choose to engage in only aerobic activities, many more have added weight training to their workout program. Why? Simply put, it provides several benefits that aerobic exercise cannot. It is extremely effective in strengthening the muscles, joints and bones.

Besides providing the strengthening benefits, weight training has many applications in the rehabilitation and prevention of injuries. As we age, the effects of gravity become more and more apparent. It is visible in our gait, our posture and the overall way in which we move and function. A good weight-training program can make a remarkable difference in how we are affected by time. Cosmetically, weight training builds, shapes and even sculpts the human body like nothing else. It develops the muscles that give shape to the body. In addition, due to the metabolic increase associated with gaining lean tissues, it is a key factor in reducing body fat.

It just makes you feel great!

Some people are intimidated just by the words weight-training and share the belief that it is just for the Mr. And Ms. Olympia types. Wrong! I had that same idea 5 years ago when I began my program with weights. A friend dragged me into the gym, onto the weight floor and I was shocked to see that there were people there of all shapes and sizes. I have not looked back since.

There are many well-illustrated (because it is so important to have the proper form) books and videos with weight-training programs for all levels – beginner to advanced- that can be done in the comfort and privacy of your own home. If you are a member of a gym and have stuck to the cardio machines, ask one of the trainers to give you a training session on the weight machines (usually free with membership).

As a person I can tell you that weight training has given me more energy and overall confidence in what I can achieve. As a Massage Therapist I can tell you that strong, healthy muscles will recover more rapidly from injury. In 7 years of practice I have seen this proven many, many times.

In next months Newsletter, I will discuss some good exercises for strengthening the back muscles (with illustrations) If you have any questions on this topic, feel free to contact me here at the website.

Stay healthy!
