A Healthy Party Season

We trust your Thanksgiving was a feast of gratitude - and goodies! As the holiday party season kicks off, here are some tips for being responsible and staying healthy. There's no reason why you can't enjoy holiday treats and feasts and still look and feel good in the New Year.

  1. Don't party on an empty stomach
It's tempting to avoid eating during the day to save room for all the food at the evening's festivities. When you meet the vast spread with a starving stomach, you eat faster and you eat more. Avoid overeating at the party by eating breakfast and lunch.
  2. Try a little of everything
Enjoy drinks, desserts, sweets, and appetizers guilt-free by employing moderation. Small portions and samples will include a smaller portion of the calories and fat. Fill your plate reasonably and with smaller portions, and pay attention to when you feel full. Be particularly careful with higher-fat foods, such as creamy, cheesy, and fried foods.
  3. Alternative drinking
Alcoholic drinks like beer or Irish Cream are high in calories - not to mention creamy eggnog! Choose drinks with fewer calories, such as dry wine, or Caesar cocktails. Look for low-fat or low-calorie eggnog alternatives.
  4. Hydrating chaser
Avoid the party-hangover-coffee vicious cycle. Drink a glass of water for every caffeinated and alcoholic beverage you enjoy, to avoid the hangover and dehydration. This season can be stressful, and your hydration needs will increase accordingly. Support your frazzled nerves with at least 8 glasses of water each day.
  5. Make a move - stay warmer
You can make room for the holiday abundance with daily physical activity. Burn some calories before and after a big meal or outing, to maintain balance and health. Resist the urge to hibernate, and join your family and friends on an invigorating walk. This will work up an appetite, so drink a glass of water before sitting down to the table, to avoid overeating.

There are many unique challenges mixed in with the celebration and joy of the holiday season. To keep your body adapting to the changes in schedule and weather, keep up with regular chiropractic treatments. Adjustments keep your body moving right; keep your immune system fighting strong; and keep your mind clear. Make your chiropractic team part of your family's winter traditions!
