Obese more likely to need joint replacement

People who are obese (BMI of 30 or higher) were three times more likely to get hip or knee replacements compared to people with a healthy weight according to a recent report published by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). The association with obesity was strongest among those requiring knee replacement. Nearly 9 in 10 knee replacement patients in 2003-2004 were either overweight or obese compared to just over 7 in 10 patients who had a hip replacement.
